Installation of CAT5, CAT6 and CAT7 Cabling Installation
Let’s dispel any industry jargon and get to the heart of what you need to know for your cabling installation. The decisions you make about category have cost implications. They can also help you future-proof your business.
Making the right choice is vital, as your whole IT infrastructure relies on the quality of these cables.
What is CAT5, CAT6 and CAT7 cabling?
These are all types of ethernet cables that connect your computer network to your servers and the internet.
What’s the difference between CAT5, CAT6 and CAT7 cabling?
CAT5 cabling is the type of data cabling that the majority of buildings have now. It was introduced in 1995 and has been the industry standard for years. Right now, CAT5 (and its sub-variety CAT5E) copes reasonably well with data transfer and bandwidth.
However, we will all need to move to CAT6 cabling soon.
Bandwidth technology has advanced and CAT5 will soon be obsolete. CAT6 is differently constructed to CAT5 and copes with much higher bandwidths. Whitestar advises all but the smallest new business networks to opt for CAT6 cabling. It costs 10-20% more than CAT5, but performance is significantly higher. This higher initial cost will save you money in the long run, as you won’t need to replace your ethernet cables a few years down the line.
CAT7 is an even higher-speed ethernet cable. Whitestar can help you weigh up if CAT7 cabling is necessary for your project. Usually only the largest businesses or complex networks need the speed that CAT7 cabling provides.
Data cabling installation costs: 3 points to consider
Reduced infrastructure costs
A well-planned, expertly-installed data cabling system streamlines your operations and minimises downtime. This means lower maintenance costs and significant savings on repairing and replacing damaged or outdated equipment.
Flexibility and opportunities to grow
You can easily add new devices and expand your network as needed. This lets your business keep pace with changing technology and ensures you’re ready for growth.
Safety and security
A properly installed data cabling system means both your data and equipment are protected from electrical surges, fires and other possible hazards. This means you minimise the risk of data loss, damage or theft, and have peace of mind that your investment is protected.
Does your Data Cabling Installation need to be tested?
Test results are a vital piece of the data cabling jigsaw. Whitestar tests and certifies all installations to the latest industry standards, including the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
When our commercial data cable installers hand your project over, we share test results with you. Each cable comes complete with a downloadable software link and report. This contains data, graphs, ID and all test results.
Why do we test and share so carefully?
It means that anyone responsible for maintaining your data cabling installation in the future knows exactly what they’re working with.
